caregiver infant interactions Flashcards
(7 cards)
reciprocity
- interaction when one persons actions is followed by a response from the another
- reciprocal behaviour shown from birth
- -reciprocal interaction = builds secure attachment
alertness period , reciprocity
- go through alterness period = more responsive and interactive
- behaviours = eye contact, tracking caregiver etc
- caregiver = notices signs 2/3rd of the time (Feldman 2007)
interactional synchrony
- mirroring of facial / bodily movements between 2 people
- happens in synchronised way
- happens between caregiver and infant and supports development of secure attachment
interactional synchrony study
metlzoff and Moore 1997
aim = to see if parents and babies demostrate interactional synchrony
procedure - had an adult model show one of 3 facial expressions/hand gestures, baby had dummy in his mouth at first to block facial expressions , dummy removed , infant reaction recorded on video
findings
- infants as young as 2 weeks old could mirror facial and hand gestures
- shows that is= happens very early on in development
strength , lab
p- filmed in lab
e- distractions for baby = controlled, + films means observation can be recorded , analysed later on , won’t miss key behaviours
e- dont know= being observed = no demand characterics
l= data = good reliability and validity
limitation , accurately measure behaviour
p- hard to tell what behaviour rlly means e
e- babies have uncontrolled movements , wave hands/ make facial expressions for no reason
e- difficult for researchers to know if baby is responding to an adult or behaving randomly
l- so using babies = uncertain , results reflect real behaviour
limitation , socially sensitive
p- research is socially sensitive
e- research may suggest = raising child certain way is harmful/less effective
e- study may imply = mothers who go back to wrk after birth = limiting interaction synchrony
l- leads to idea that mothers shouldn’t go back to work too early = sensitive to some families
