role of the father Flashcards
(15 cards)
3 main theories of role of the father
- d lacks sensitive responsiveness
- d play rolee of playmate
- d just as caring and sensitive as mothers
bowlby
- didnt think fathers and babies formed attachment
- attachment = monotropic ,= formed between baby and mother
Schaffer and Emerson
- showed babies form multiple attachments , including w fathers
grossman 2002
- longitudinal study
- looked at relationship between children and their parents
3 things that Grossman looked at
- assessed parents sensitivity and involvement
- looked at how parents behaviour and attachment related to quality of attachment in adolescence
gross man findings
- mothers attachment was closely related to later attachment , suggests mothers attachment = more important for emtotional development
- fathers attachment = LESS related to later attachment , suggests fathers may play different roel , not emotional bonding
- fathers play + stimulation = strongly linked to later attachment
- so father srole = about playfulness not caregiving.
field et al
observational study
- frame by frame video analysis , to look at interactions between parents and children.
what did field look at
- sensitive reponseness ( how sensitive they were to their Childs needs)
- the amount of time they spent playing w their children -
what did field find
- dads = spend more time playing w children
- mums =. more sensitive responsiveness
but
- dads who are primary caregiver = just as much sensitive responsiveness as mothers
brown et al 2012
- longitudinal study
- looked at father child relationship at 13 months and 3 years
what did brown find
- more involved/sensitive dad was at 13 months , the stronger their attachment was at 3 years old
cultural factors
- society= fathers need to act like breadwinner not caregiver = causes dads to adopt playmate roll
- fathers couldn’t get paid paternity leave
strength. ,
p - pratical vlaues for families
e- if fathers are seen as equal caregiver , can influence parental leave policies
e- support gender equality and economic productivity , as mothers may be able to return to work sooner
l- fatherhood = real world benefits
strength , same sex
p- same sex families show that fathers aren’t needed for secure attachment
e- research shows that babies raised by 2 mothers do jut as well as those who have a father
e- suggests its not about gender of caregiver but quality of caregiving
l- so fathers role not biologically unique
strength , short term studies
p- research into role of father = often short term or observational studies
e- dont follow children long engohg to show how attachment effects development overtime
e- longitundal studies needed to assess long-term impact
l- so conclusions abt father = incomplete
