caregiver infant interactions Flashcards
(15 cards)
what is reciprocity?
an interaction when each person responds to the other and elicits a response.
example of reciprocity?
caregiver responds to babies smile by saying something causing the baby to respond to what the caregiver said
what is the alert phase
when babies signal that they are ready for an interaction (making eye contact) and mothers pick up on this and respond
when did does the alert phase become increasingly frequent
3 months
who conducted research into active involvement
Branzetton
Brazetton et al 1975
described active involvement as a ‘dance’ because like a couple they both react to each others moves
what is interactional synchrony
the temporal co-ordination of micro level social behaviour
feldemans findings
caregiver and babies interact in a way that their actions and emotions mirror the other
meltzoff and moore 1977
found that interactional synchrony begins from as young as 2 weeks old
isabella et al (1989)
high levels of interactional synchrony associated with better quality mother-baby attachment
AO1 points for essay
outline two types of interactions
reciprocity
alert phase - feldman
brazelton
interactional synchrony
meltzoff and moore
better quality - isabella
AO3
P- caregiver infant interactions are filmed in a lab
controls other activity which could distract the baby. filmed observations, recorded and analysed later and can establish inter rater reliability
P- hard to interpret babies behaviours
can’t detrmine what’s going on from the baby’s perspective
P- observing behaviour doesn’t tell us its developmental importance
feldman suggested that ideas like synchrony and reciprocity simply giev names to patterns of observable behaviour
D- evidence from other research suggests early interactions are important
Isabella suggested that interactional synchrony was associated with good quality attachment suggesting that caregiver infant interactions are important
