cariology Flashcards
(18 cards)
What indicates that a child is ready for supervised brushing? what age does this tend to occur?
Ability to tie own shoe laces
7/8yrs old
What is the relationship between enamel and dentine?
Enamel is hard but brittle, while dentine is soft and acts as a shock absorber
Are all enamel white spot lesions indicative of caries?
No, need to consider location; if at gingival margin under plaque, likely caries
at what stage do u want to detect caries? why?
white spot lesion - this can be remineralised
What can help remineralize a white spot lesion?
Oral hygiene instructions (OHI), fluoride varnish, etc.
Is staining an indicator of caries?
No
What does grey/black shadowing under enamel indicate?
Caries into dentine
Is the color of dentine a good indicator of disease activity?
No
What is the only way to assess disease activity in dentine?
Tactile feedback through a ball-ended probe
What tactile feedback indicates inactive dentine?
Hard
What tactile feedback indicates active dentine?
Soft and rough
remember
Many studies show it performs better than other techniques e.g. selective caries removal.
true or false: hall technique has a more predictable outcome than other techniques?
true
What are the advantages of the Hall technique?
- More predictable outcome
- Doesn’t require LA, caries removal, tooth preparation
What conditions must be met to perform the Hall technique? 3
- History, exam, and bitewings completed
- Asymptomatic
- Band of normal dentine radiographically
What are the indications for the Hall technique? 3
- Proximal lesion
- Multi-surface lesion
- Occlusal lesion only if child can’t tolerate other treatment
What are the contraindications for the Hall technique? 4
- Symptoms: irreversible pulpitis, abscess, infection
- Radiographically caries into pulp, pulpal exposure, apical pathology
- Badly broken down tooth
- Teeth with arrested caries
What does selective caries removal reduce the risk of compared to complete caries removal?
Iatrogenic pulpal exposure
