Carotid Artery Assessment Flashcards
(10 cards)
- Position the patient
Have the patient lie down comfortably with their head slightly elevated and turned slightly away from the side being examined.
- Locate the carotid artery
The carotid artery can be found in the neck, just below the jawline. It is usually palpable and can be felt on either side of the trachea.
Use gentle pressure
Use light to moderate pressure when palpating the carotid artery to avoid causing discomfort or disrupting blood flow.
- Palpate one side at a time
Assess one carotid artery at a time to prevent blocking blood flow to the brain causing bradycardia and possible loss of consciousness
- Use the pads of your fingers
Use the pads of your index and middle fingers to palpate the carotid artery, avoiding excessive pressure with the fingertips.
- Assess for pulsations
Feel for the pulsations of the carotid artery, which should be regular and synchronous with the heartbeat.
- Note any abnormalities
Pay attention to the strength, rhythm, and symmetry of the pulsations, as well as any thrills (abnormal vibrations) that may indicate a cardiac abnormality., typically aortic abnormality
- Document findings
Record your assessment findings, including the presence or absence of pulsations, any abnormalities detected, and the patient’s response to the examination
- Communicate with the patient
Explain the procedure to the patient, ensure their comfort and privacy, and address any concerns they may have during the assessment.
- Practice proper infection control
Wash your hands before and after the examination and use gloves if there is a risk of exposure to bodily fluids.
