A

Check for FAS

  • Small head (when checking OFC)
  • Small or large eyes
  • IUGR (problems with breathing, feeding, trouble keeping a steady body temperature, low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia), problems fighting off infections, neurological problems – reflexes)
  • Hearing disorders
  • Shallow philtrum
  • Thin upper lip
  • Congenital abnormalities - cleft lip, palpate, heart defects

A

baby may have low blood sugar, blood sugars should be monitored. Check documentation. Breastfeeding is not affected and no side effects noted.

A

Due to IVF, dad’s history may not be available
If it is and dad is a sickle cell carrier, there is a higher chance for baby. Therefore, referral to Genetic counselling along with fetal medicine support.

Signs of sickle cells in babies.

  • Facial droop
  • Loss of consciousness

A

There is no evidence thrush can harm an unborn baby. However, it can transfer during labour so look about for oral thrush in babies. Although baby may not feed as well.

what is moxibustion?

A

Moxibustion is safe for pregnant women and best started at 33-34 weeks, moxa stick stimulate heat receptors on the skin of the toes to encourage oestrogen and prostaglandins stimulating contractions

A

Appears jaundice, complete SBR and inform the paeds to inform them that you have done this and to be aware to review it. Also inform them of your feeding plan ask if they agree and if they would change or add anything?

Clotrimazole for thrush - Generally considered safe to use during breastfeeding. if baby is being treated for oral thrush, mum needs to be treated too. By applying the cream to nipples after a feed. It is safe during pregnancy.

Provide feeding support to avoid this again.

  • No screening done, close eye for signs of syndromes:
  • Edwards - Congenital heart defects, Diaphragmatic hernia, Low set and malformed ears, Small mouth and jaw, Wide epicanthic folds, Clenched hand and overlapping fingers
  • Downs - Up-slanting palpebral fissures, Epicanthic folds - skin fold of the upper eye covering the corner of the eye, Protruding tongue - large in portion to other structures of the mouth, Hypotonia - decreased muscle tone, Palm of hand with only one crease
  • Patau’s - Small triangular head and jaw, Bilateral cleft lip and palate, Sloping forehead, Malformed ears Abnormal extremities
