Cassandre Flashcards

Colour
The use of a blue gradient in the background suggests the sky and the idea of the train being outdoors. As blue is a receding colour it helps the train stand out and the viewer focus on the bold black shapes of the train.
Consideration Of Function
The imagery used clearly illustrates what the poster is selling.
The dramatic angles of both the train image and the track lines in the background make the train and thus the journey appear fast and exciting to customers.
Use for mat/tech
The poster is produced by lithograph print. Cassandre would have used this technique because it would allow the design to be mass produced with a polished and smooth finish making it eye-catching and attracting his audiences more effectively.
Use of tech
Cassandre used airbrushing. He applied this in layers to blend areas of tone together, creating a smooth texture. The gradiated tone and colour produced makes his design look modern and refined. This is effective in communicating idea of precision and streamlining associated with new advances in
machinery/technology, making the poster extremely effective.
Working methods
He used stencils for both imagery and text and airbrushed bold colours in sections. This allowed him to create a simple dramatic image where the tonal ranges gradually blended from dark to light making it eye-catching.
Aesthetics
Cassandre uses a bold, geometric, black, stylised shape for the central image of the train which creates a strong focal point making it extremely eye-catching and allows the viewer to clearly understand what the poster is advertising.
Target market/audience
‘Nord Express’ appeals to those people who have enough money to go on expensive holidays. The possibility of travelling to exotic locations was new to many and Cassandre’s poster made it look glamorous, exciting and enticing.
Consideration of style
The way Cassandre links his typography with his images is one of the hallmarks of his design. Type is not a separate element but is integrated with the image to create a unified design. This helps the poster appear streamlined.
