facts about the black death

A
  • reached England’s shores in June 1348
  • plague caused around 1.5 million deaths out of a population of an approximate 4 million people, which is a death rate of around 1 in 3
  • led to huge work deficit in years after the plague
  • Landowners didn’t have enough workers for fields
  • the people could now demand higher wages as there wasn’t enough peasants around to work
  • This led to a, ‘Peasant enlightenment, where they were beginning to understand their worth

A
  • financial demands of the Hundred Years’ War led to the levying of three poll taxes in four years
  • starting in 1377, then 1379 and finally 1380
  • people started avoiding paying it so Parliament appointed commissioners to make them pay
  • people got angry and it led to rioting
