facts about the black death
A
- reached England’s shores in June 1348
- plague caused around 1.5 million deaths out of a population of an approximate 4 million people, which is a death rate of around 1 in 3
- led to huge work deficit in years after the plague
- Landowners didn’t have enough workers for fields
- the people could now demand higher wages as there wasn’t enough peasants around to work
- This led to a, ‘Peasant enlightenment, where they were beginning to understand their worth

- peasants felt they should get paid more after black death, statute of labourers prevented this

- financial demands of the Hundred Years’ War led to the levying of three poll taxes in four years
- starting in 1377, then 1379 and finally 1380
- people started avoiding paying it so Parliament appointed commissioners to make them pay
- people got angry and it led to rioting
