  • Wat Tyler met King Richard II
    -there where 60 knights and nobles + Lord Mayor of London William Walworth
  • Wat Tyler demanded free fishing
  • confiscation of all church lands
    -reiterated the previous demands of the peasants
  • Walworth told Tyler to speak to King with respect
  • Tyler moved to attack Walworth
  • Walworth struck him with a blow across the neck and chest
  • a furthering blow mortally wounded Wat

Facts about the outbreak of revolt

  • 30th May 1381, villagers of Fobbing, Essex got threatened by Thomas de Bampton when refusing to pay Poll Tax
  • 100 villagers in all, including those from Corringham got together to drive him and his officers away

  • guards opened drawbridge at Southwark, which allowed rebels to pass over London bridge as they were threatened by large mob
  • others later that day came from the North under Jack Straw
  • lots of looting
  • that night peasants became drunk on plundered
