Cell Biology Flashcards
(16 cards)
What does a plant cell have that an animal cell doesn’t
A cell wall, vacuole and chloroplasts
How is DNA stored in a bacterial cell
In plasmids and a loop of dna
What does a bacterial cell contain
Cell wall, cytoplasm, plasmids, loop of dna and flagella
Why is mitosis important
Growth and repair of multicellular organisms, repairing damaged tissues and asexual reproduction
Difference between embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells
Adult - taken from organs and tissues eg bone marrow and can only specialise to form certain types of cells
Embryonic - from early embryo can make all type of cells
What are stem cells used for
Treat conditions such as Parkinson’s disease through therapeutic cloning of embryos
What are the concerns eith using stem cells from cloned embryos
Infection risk and ethical objections (damaging human life)
Where r stem cells found in plays
The meristem
What is diffusion
Net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low
Factors that affect diffusion
Concentration gradient, temperature and surface area of membrane
What is osmosis
Diffusion of water from a dilute solution to concentrated solution (low concentration of water) across a partically permeable membrane
Where did active transport occur in plants
In root hairs to diffuse minerals and ions from the soil into the plant
What’s a hypertonic solution
Higher concentration outside the cell and lower inside the cell (hypotonic is the opposite)
Which cells are bigger eukaryotes or prokaryotes
Eukaryotes
Why do you add dye to the cells when observing them under a microscope
To stain them easier to see AS SOME ARE TRANSPARENT
What is 0.03mm in micrometers?
30 micrometers
