Cell Parts Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the difference between an animal and plant cell?
Plant cells are found only in plants and have three extra parts (vacuole, cell wall, and chloroplasts).
What is the nucleus?
It contains DNA (deoxyribonucleic (dee-OK-see-ri-bo-new-klee-ik) acid) and tells the cell what to do.
What is a mitochondria?
It uses energy to release food (turns glucose and oxygen to energy, leaving CO2 and water). Cells contain 1000-2500 mitochondria and cannot function without them.
What is cytoplasm?
A jelly-like substance containing all of the cell organelles and where the chemical reactions happen.
What is the cell membrane?
It surrounds the cell and controls the movement of substances in and out.
What is the cell wall?
It surrounds the cell (beyond the cell membrane) to give the cell structure and stop it from bursting. ONLY PLANT CELLS HAVE THEM!!!
What is a vacuole?
It is filled with water, nutrients, and waste products. It keeps the cell hard. ONLY FOUND IN PLANT CELLS!!!
What is a chloroplast?
It absorbs light for photosynthesis (where it uses CO2, water, and sunlight to create energy in the form of glucose and releases oxygen as a byproduct) ONLY FOUND IN PLANTS
What is a ribosome?
It produces proteins for the cell.
