Microscopes Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is a microscope?
An instrument that magnifies an object.
What is the eyepiece lens?
The lens closest to your eye. It usually has a magnification of 10x.
What are the objective lenses?
There are 3 lenses of different strengths to magnify the image more clearly.
What is the stage?
The place where you put a slide. Clips hold the line in place.
What is the diaphragm?
It is a knob to adjust the amount of light shining through the slide.
What is the light?
It projects light onto the specimen. It can be a mirror or an electric bulb.
What is the base?
This is very heavy to prevent the microscope from falling over.
What is the arm?
It holds the eyepiece lens above the stage.
What is the fine focus knob?
It is use to further clarify the image AFTER using the focus knob.
What is the coarse focus knob?
It is used to largely raise or lower the stage and make the specimen clear before the fine focus knob
What is magnification?
How much bigger or smaller an image is than in real life.
What is resolution?
The ability to distinguish between two parts of the image or the detail visible.
How do you calculate magnification?
You multiply the magnification of the eyepiece lens by the magnification of the objective lens. E.g:
Eyepiece lens = 10x (assume this unless stated otherwise)
Objective lens = 40x
10 x 40 = 400x
How do you use a microscope?
- Carry it by the base and arm
- Use the lowest power objective lens
- Adjust the light
- Place the slide on the stage
- Turn the course knob until you can clearly see your slide.
- Use the fine focus knob to refine the image
- Use the higher power objective lenses to see the object with higher magnification.
