Specialised Cells Flashcards
(6 cards)
Ciliated epithelial cell
Specialised: tiny hairs called cilia
Example: The ciliated epithelial cell in the respiratory tract helps to sweep mucus and debris out of the airways.
Root hair cell
Specialised: has extended cell wall which helps absorb more nutrients and the roots split up to make hair
Example: Root hair cells are found in the root system of plants and are responsible for absorbing water and minerals from the soil.
Red blood cell
Specialised: has no nucleus
Example: Red blood cells are able to carry oxygen throughout the body because they lack a nucleus.
Sperm cell
Specialised: has a tail to swim in the woman’s uterus, has many mitochondria to have enough energy to swim, has a pointed head to enter the egg
Example: Sperm cells are the male reproductive cells responsible for fertilizing the female egg.
Egg cell
Specialised: has haploid which has genetic material for fertilisation
Example: The egg cell, or ovum, contains the genetic material needed for fertilization by a sperm cell.
Nerve cell
Specialised: thin and up to 1 meter long, has myelin that surrounds them and makes messages travel around the body faster
Example: Nerve cells, or neurons, transmit electrical impulses throughout the body to facilitate communication between different parts of the body.
