Cell recognition and Immune System Flashcards
1
Q
What’s an Antigen ?
A
A molecule that triggers an immune response
2
Q
what are the functions of T Lymphocytes ?
A
- Have cell surface receptors to sense antigens or pathogens
*Kill infected cells by inducing Apoptosis - Activates other useful cells when an immune response is triggered
3
Q
What are the functions of Cytotoxic T cells ?
A
Kill pathogens by releasing Antitoxins
4
Q
What is Phagocytosis ?
A
The process Where:
* Pseudopodia form from phagocyte and engulf pathogen
* Pathogen is dragged into cell and placed into lysosome
* Enzymes then released into lysosome to digest pathogen
5
Q
What are the functions of B Lymphocytes ?
A
- Have antigen receptors on their CSM
- Once activated by coming into contact with antigen , splits into a Memory Cell and Plasma Cell
6
Q
What is a memory Cell ?
A
A cell that remains in the bloodstream and always has a copy of a past infections antibodies prepared
7
Q
What is a plasma cell ?
A
Produce antibodies for the Antigen the B Lymphocyte came into contact with
8
Q
What’s an Antibody ?
A
- Proteins produced by plasma cells to bind to and neutralize the harmful substances such as Viruses or Bacteria
*Bind to another pathogen with second arm eventually forming clump of pathogens that are easier to kill (Agglutination)
