cells Flashcards
(20 cards)
Cell
the smallest unit that can perform all life processes.
Nucleus
a membrane-bound organelle that contains the cell’s DNA and that has a role in processes such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction.
Cytoplasm
fluid that the organelles are set in.
cell Membrane
the barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell’s environment.
Cell Wall
a rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support for the cell and is only found in plant cells.
Mitochondra
the site of cellular respiration so it can use energy.
Chloroplast
organelles in plant and algae cells in which photosynthesis takes place.
Golgi Complex
packages materials to be transported throughout the cell.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
allows for the transport of cellular materials.
Ribosome
organelles that make proteins which are building materials for the cell.
Lysosome
digests waste product in a cell.
Vacuole
stores water in the cell.
Organelles
structures that perform specific functions within a cell.
Prokaryote
any organism that consists of a single cell that doesn’t have a nucleus.
Eukaryote
an organism made up of a cell that has a nucleus enclosed by membrane.
Tissue
a combined group of similar cells forming a definite kind of structural material with a specific function in a multicellular organism.
Organ
a group of tissues that make a specific structure that performs important functions.
Organ System
a biological system consisting of a group of organs that work together to perform system functions.
organism
a life form composed mutually interdependent parts that maintain vital life processes.
Structure
the constructive organization of parts, in this case, cells, and/or tissues that form an organism.
