Cold Blooded Vertebrates Flashcards
(15 cards)
Defined as being warm blooded having a blood temperature that is regulated by the body.
Endothermic
An animal that has a spine, or backbone composed of vertebrae made of bone or cartilage.
Vertebrates
Defined as being cold blooded with a blood temperature regulated by the surrounding temperature of the environment.
Ectothermic
Sensory system in fish and some amphibians that detects water movement and vibrations
Lateral Line
Organs found on fish that extract oxygen from water for breathing.
Gills
Leech-like fish that have a cupped, circular mouth that latches on to prey. They have a backbone and are therefore fish.
Jawless Fish
Fish that have a skeleton and skin made of cartilage.
Cartilaginous Fish
Fish with a skeleton made of bone.
Bony Fish
Gas filled organs found in bony fish that help them maintain buoyancy.
Swim Bladder
One of the five groups of vertebrate animals that live both in and out of the water, are cold blooded, and have slimy skin.
Amphibians
Organ that processes oxygen through breaths of air.
Lungs
The larva state of a frog or toad.
Tadpole
The process in which some animals experience change from a larva adolescent to an adult through several growth stages.
Metamorphosis
Eggs laid by birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and Monotremes(egg laying mammals) that contain embryos of the next generation of the species that lay them.
Amniotic Eggs
One of the five groups of vertebrate animals that have scaly skin and are cold blooded.
