Cells Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is the maximum magnification of a light microscope?
A light microscope can only be used up to a magnification of x2000.
What type of microscope can be used for higher magnification?
An electron microscope can be used for higher magnification and more detail.
However, an electron microscope can only view dead material.
How is magnification calculated?
Magnification = eyepiece magnification x objective magnification.
What are specialised cells?
Cells that can differentiate into specialised cells, adapted to specific functions, making them more efficient.
What is the function of red blood cells?
Red blood cells contain haemoglobin and are biconcave in shape to maximise efficiency in carrying oxygen.
What are the main components of animal cells?
Animal cells contain: Nucleus, Cell membrane, Cytoplasm, Vacuole, Mitochondria.
What are the main components of plant cells?
Plant cells contain: Nucleus, Cell membrane, Cytoplasm, Vacuole, Chloroplasts, Cell wall.
What is the smallest unit of life?
Cell.
What is a group of similar cells performing a specific function called?
Tissue.
What is the function of the nucleus?
Contains chromosomes which carry genetic information and controls actions of the cell.
What does the cell membrane do?
Controls the entry and exit of substances.
What is the cytoplasm’s role?
Site of most cellular reactions.
What does the vacuole contain?
Contains a watery sugar solution called sap. When full, it pushes the cytoplasm against the cell wall.
What is the function of chloroplasts?
Site of photosynthesis.
What is the function of the cell wall?
Contains cellulose and provides structural support for cells.
What is the role of mitochondria ?
Site of aerobic respiration
What is the organization of cells?
Specialised cells, Tissues, Organs, Organ system, Organism.
What is the function of sperm cells?
Sperm cells have tails so they can swim to the egg cell.
What is
