Q

what do both animal and plant cells have

A

nucleus - controls what the cell does
cytoplasm- jelly-like substance where all the chemical reaction takes place
cell membrane- thin layer of lipids and proteins surrounding the cell that controls what goes in and out of the cell

Q

what do ONLY plant cells have

A

cell wall- a rigid coating made of cellulose that gives support to the cell
vacuole- a large space filled with cell sap which is a weak solution of sugar and salt
chloroplasts- these contain chlorophyll used for photosynthesis

Q

how is sperm a specialised cell

A
  1. its very little and has a tail which provides movement allowing it to swim to find an egg
  2. its head contains enzymes so it can digest its way through the egg membrane so the 2 nuclei can join
  3. it contains chromosomes that carry genetic info from the father that can be passed onto the offspring

Q

how is the Ovum (egg cell) specialised cell

A
  1. its large and bulky bc no active movement is needed
  2. it contains yolk a large food store needed for developing young organisms once its fertilised
  3. it contains chromosomes carrying genetic info from the mother

Q

how is the palisade cell specialised (plant cell)

A
  1. its tall with a large surface area and found on the top side of a leaf- ideal for absorption of CO2 and light (needed for photosynthesis)
  2. they are packed with chloroplasts which contain the green pigment chlorophyll needed for photosynthesis

Q

how is the cilia cell designed to stop lung damage

A
  1. cilia cells line all the air passages in your lungs
  2. they have tiny hairs which filter air as it passes through
  3. the hairs sweep mucus with trapped dust and bacteria up to the back of the throat , where its swallowed

Q

how is the root cell designed for absorbing

A
  1. it has a large surface area which helps absorption of mater and minerals
  2. it has a really thin cell wall which makes it easier for minerals to pass across the root it self
