Cells Flashcards

1
Q

What is the cell theory?

A
  1. The cell is the basic unit of life
  2. cells arise from pre-existing cells

Q

What is the cell membrane and what does it do?

A

The cell membrane is the protective barrier of the cell. It controls the passage of materials in and out of the cell.

Q

What is the cytoplasm and what does it do?

A

Cytoplasm feels the cell and surround the organelles. It allows the movement of organelles and nutrients within the cell.

Q

What is the nucleus and what does it do?

A

The nucleus is The brain of the cell, it controls all cell functions. Chromosomes are found in the nucleus, which contain DNA.

Q

What is the nucleosis and what does it do.?

A

The nucleolus is a small dense part in the nucleus. It is a part of the production of ribosomes.

Q

What are vacuoles and what do they do?

A

Vacuoles are membrane bound and store nutrients, waste and other substances. In plant cells, they store water.

Q

What are lysosomes and what do they do?

A

This is the area where digestion occurs. I Lysosomes, enzymes break down bacteria, old parts and food.

Q

What is the endoplasmic reticulum and what does it do?

A

The endoplasmic reticulum is a series of interconnected tubes that carry material throughout the cell. Rough endoplasmic reticulum is part of protein making, and smooth endoplasmic reticulum produces lipids.

Q

What are ribosomes and what do they do?

A

Ribosomes are attached to rough endoplasmic reticulum or are found in the cytoplasm. They assemble proteins.

Q

What are some differences between plant and animal cells?

A

Plant cells have a cell wall, animal cells have a cell membrane.
Plant cells contain chloroplasts and chlorophyll, animal cells do not.
Plant cells have a large central vacuole, animal cells vacuoles tend to be small and they may have more than one.
Plant cells store energy in the form of starch or oil, animal cells store energy as a carb or lipid.

17
Q

What does the tube of a microscope do?

A

Separates the ocular lens from the objective lens.

18
Q

What does the revolving nose piece do?

A

Holds the objective lenses

19
Q

What do the objective lenses do?

A

Magnify specimens; three onesies are usually four times, 10 times, 40 times

20
Q

What do the stage clips do?

A

Hold the slide in position on the stage

21
Q

What does the diaphragm do?

A

Allows light to pass through the specimen

22
Q

What does the lamp do?

A

Supplies the light that passes through the specimen

23
Q

What does the ocular lens do?

A

Magnifies the specimen, usually by 10 times

24
Q

What does the arm do

A

Holds the tube in place and is used to carry the microscope

25
Q

What does the stage do

A

Supports the slide for observation

26
Q

What does the course adjustment knob do

A

Move the stage up or down to focus on the specimen. Use only on low power

27
Q

What is the fine adjustment knob do

A

Sharpens an image, use on medium or high power

28
Q

What does the bass do

A

Provide a stable platform for the microscope
