Cells Flashcards
What is the cell theory?
- The cell is the basic unit of life
- cells arise from pre-existing cells
- all living organisms are composed of cells
What is the cell membrane and what does it do?
The cell membrane is the protective barrier of the cell. It controls the passage of materials in and out of the cell.
What is the cytoplasm and what does it do?
Cytoplasm feels the cell and surround the organelles. It allows the movement of organelles and nutrients within the cell.
What is the nucleus and what does it do?
The nucleus is The brain of the cell, it controls all cell functions. Chromosomes are found in the nucleus, which contain DNA.
What is the nuclear membrane?
The nuclear membrane surrounds the nucleus.
What is the nucleosis and what does it do.?
The nucleolus is a small dense part in the nucleus. It is a part of the production of ribosomes.
What are vacuoles and what do they do?
Vacuoles are membrane bound and store nutrients, waste and other substances. In plant cells, they store water.
What do vesicles do?
Vesicles transport substances throughout the cell.
What is the mitochondria and what does it do?
The mitochondria contains a double membrane. It is the energy centre of the cell, it converts sugar into energy.
What are lysosomes and what do they do?
This is the area where digestion occurs. I Lysosomes, enzymes break down bacteria, old parts and food.
What does the golgi apparatus do?
It modifies, packages and sorts proteins for delivery in and out of the cells.
What is the endoplasmic reticulum and what does it do?
The endoplasmic reticulum is a series of interconnected tubes that carry material throughout the cell. Rough endoplasmic reticulum is part of protein making, and smooth endoplasmic reticulum produces lipids.
What are ribosomes and what do they do?
Ribosomes are attached to rough endoplasmic reticulum or are found in the cytoplasm. They assemble proteins.
What does the cell wall do?
Cell walls provide strength, protection and support to the cell.
What are chloroplasts and what do they do?
Chloroplasts are found only in plant cells. They contain chlorophyl which aid in photosynthesis.
