Cells and life vocab Flashcards
(24 cards)
Cell membrane
The outer layer of the cell that lets somethings in and somethings out
Cytoplasm
The liquid that everything floats in and where chemical reactions happen
Nucleus
The brain of the cell and where the DNA is stored
Mitochondria
The part of the cell that converts sugar into energy
Vacuole
This stores water and nutrients for later use
Chloroplast
This contains chlorophyll which is the pigment used in photosynthesis
Cell wall
This is the harder wall surrounding the cell membrane which is much sturdier
Which 3 structures is present in a plant cell, but not an animal cell?
Vacuole, chloroplast and cell wall
What is MRS (C) GREN?
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity

Reproduction
Excretion

Uterus
Protective ‘bag’ that the baby sits in, when uterus lining is shed, this is your period
Embryo
When a zygote is implanted onto the uterus wall
Zygote
After a fertilisation when the eggs are splitting, and before it implants onto the uterus wall
Fallopian tube/oviduct
Where fertilisation occurs, and is the tube which the eggs travel to the uterus through
Cervix
The ‘doorway’ in and out the uterus
Umbilical cord
The cord which the mother gives the baby nutrients through
Amniotic sac and fluid
Protects the baby
Placenta
Acts as a barrier between the mother and the baby
Monozygotic twins are: (give four points)
Always the same gender
Genetically identical
Usually share a placenta
One fertilisation but splits afterwards
Dizygotic twins: (give four points)
Two completely different fertilisations at the same time
Can be different gender
Isn’t always genetically identical
Usually do not share a placenta
Fertilisation
When the sperm meets the egg in the fallopian tube/oviduct
Menstrual cycle day 1-5
Uterus lining sheds (period)
Menstrual cycle day 6-13
Lining builds up again leading to ovulation
Menstrual cycle day 14
An egg is released one of the ovaries (ovulation)
Menstrual cycle day 15-28
Egg travels down the fallopian tube. If not fertilised, the lining shed and the process repeats. If fertilised, lining is even thicker to get ready for the baby
