Energy and Electricity vocab Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is kinetic energy?
Anything which is moving
Kinetic energy is calculated using the formula KE = 1/2 mv², where m is mass and v is velocity.
What is elastic energy?
Anything which has been stretched
Common examples include a compressed spring or a stretched rubber band.
What is chemical energy?
A substance where energy can be released by a chemical reaction
This energy is released or absorbed during a chemical reaction.
What is thermal energy?
The higher the temperature, the more thermal energy there is
Thermal energy is related to the kinetic energy of the particles in a substance.
What is gravitational energy?
Anything above the ground
It is calculated using the formula PE = mgh, where m is mass, g is acceleration due to gravity, and h is height.
What is magnetic energy?
Magnets that are attracting or repelling
Magnetic energy can be produced by magnets or electric currents.
What is the unit of energy called?
Joules
The joule is the SI unit of energy, symbolized as J.
What is a circuit?
A closed loop through which electric current flows
A circuit includes components such as resistors, capacitors, and power sources.
What does current refer to in a circuit and what is it mesured in?
The flow of electric charge point per second, (amps)
Current is measured in amperes (A).
What is an ammeter used for?
To measure electric current in a circuit
Ammeters are connected in series with the circuit to obtain accurate readings.
What is an electromagnet?
A type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electric current
Electromagnets can be turned on and off and are used in various applications, including motors and transformers.
What is a conductor?
A material that allows the flow of electric current
Common conductors include metals like copper and aluminum.
What is the potential difference and what is it mesured in
Voltage (the push of the current), volts
What is an insulator?
A material that does not allow the flow of electrical charge
