Purification Vocab Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the definition of soluble?
Soluble substances dissolve in liquids.
What is a solute?
This is the term we give for the soluble substance.
What is a solvent?
Liquids the soluble substance dissolves in.
What is a solution?
This is where we have a soluble substance and a solvent.
What is a suspension?
This is where tiny particles are floating in a liquid.
What is the definition of insoluble?
Insoluble substances can’t dissolve in liquids.
What does it mean to dissolve?
This is a substance mixed with a physical reaction with a liquid.
What is a saturated solution?
This is the solution where you have dissolved the maximum mass of a substance that can dissolve at a given temperature.
hint: seperation technique… it involves…
Distillation
This is a separation technique used to separate liquid (the solvent) from a mixture to keep the liquid. Distillation involves boiling the solution, and then condensing the vapour back into a liquid by cooling it down.
Chromatography
This is a separation technique used to separate mixtures of coloured substances such as food colourings, inks, dyes or plant pigments.
Filtering
Passing a solution through a filter to remove unwanted substances.
Super saturated solution
A solution that can contain more than it’s maximum amount of dissolved substance due to heating.
