Q

nucleus

A

largest organelle in a cell surrounded by a nuclear envelope that has nuclear pores
contains genetic material necessary for controlling cells function
this is a dense area known as the nucleolus where ribosomes are manufactured

Q

Cell surface membrane structure

A

found on the surrrfce of animal cells and just inside the cell wall of plant cells
made up of a phohpolipid bilayer with carrier and channel proteins within it

Q

function of cell surface membrane

A

its function is to regulate the movement of substances in and out of the cell it contains receptor molecules which allow it to respond to hormones such as insulin

Q

the mitochondria

A

oval shaped organelle with a double membrane
the inner membrane is folded into structure known as cristae
inner area is known as the matrix and contains the enzymes needed for aerobic respiration which produces ATP

Q

Chloroplasts

A

are flattened structured found in plant and algal cells
they are surrounded by a double membrane
they have an internal system of membranes known as thylakoids which are stacked to form structures called grana
these are linked by a lamellae
the function of the chloroplast is to carry out photosynthesis

Q

Golgi apparatus

A

consist of a series of flattened sacs surrounded by a membrane
vesicles are pinched off from the sacs its function is to process ad package molecules such as proteins and lipids
its also forms lysosomes
lysosomes contain digestive enzyme called lysosomes used to digest invading pathogens

Q

cell wall

A

rigid structure that surrounds plants algal and fungi; cells
support the cell and prevents it from changing shape
cell walls can be made of cellulose muezzin or chitin

Q

vacuole

A

membrane bound organelle found in plants cells
it contains a solution of sugar and salt known as sap
the vacuole helps to maintain pressure inside the cell and helps in getting rid of waste chemicals

16
Q

Prokaryotic cells

A

Do not have a nucleus and dna is not associated with histone proteins and is present as a circular molecule in the cytoplasm

17
Q

What prokaryotes include

A

Cell surface membrane
Circular dna
Ribosomes
Flagellum
Slime capsule
Cell wall

18
Q

Cell surface membrane in prokaryotes

A

Controls entry and exit of substances in and out of the cell

19
Q

Circular dna in prokaryotic

A

Carries genes for the proteins the cell needs
Some prokaryotes have small circles of dna called plasmids

20
Q

Ribosomes in prokaryotes are

A

Smaller

21
Q

Prophase

A

Chromosomes condsense becoming shorter and fatter and visible
Spindle fibres
Nuclear envelope reads down

22
Q

Metaphase

A

Chromosomes made from two chromatids
Line at equator
Attach to spindle fibres by their centromeres

23
Q

Anaphase

A

Chromosomes divide at. Enrromere
Spindle fibres contract
Chromatids pullled at opposite poles

24
Q

Telophase

A

Chromatids reached poles
Uncoil long and thin
Nuclear envelope
Cytokinesis begins to sppikt

25
Q

Binary fission

A

Dna and plasmids are replicated
Prokaryote splits
New cells contain some original dna
Copies of each other plasmids

26
Q

Viruses

A

Acellular
No cell structure
Don’t carry out cell division
Only able to replicate by injecting their dna or rna
Replicate and synthesising
New viruses
Burst free from host cells
