Cerebellum Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the structure and function of the cerebellum?
Two hemispheres, three lobes; coordinates movement, posture, balance
What are the four deep cerebellar nuclei?
Dentate, Interpose (emboliform, globose), fastigial
How does the cerebellum act as an error detector?
Compares intended vs actual movement and corrects errors via feedback to motor cortex
What are symptoms of cerebellar damage?
Ataxia, dysmetria, intention tremor, dysarthria, nystagmus
Which lobe of the cerebellum is involved in posture?
The flocculonodular lobe.
What is dysdiadochokinesia?
Inability to perform rapid alternating movements.
How does the cerebellum receive input from the body?
Via spinocerebellar tracts.
What causes nystagmus in cerebellar lesions?
Disrupted coordination of eye movement.
What is intention tremor?
Tremor during purposeful movement.
What is the vermis responsible for?
Trunk coordination and posture.
How can cerebellar function be clinically tested?
Finger-to-nose, heel-to-shin, gait assessment.
What is the effect of a cerebellar tumour?
Ataxia, poor balance, slurred speech, visual issues.
