cerebral hemispheres Flashcards
(13 cards)
Left hemisphere
specialises in verbal and analytical functions
Right hemisphere
specialises in non-verbal functions that do not depend on language skills
Frontal lobe functions
motor cortex, broca’s area
Primary motor cortex
Initiates and controls voluntary bodily movements contralaterally
Prefrontal cortex
Involved with many sophisticated mental abilities, attention, expression of emotions, self-awareness and aspects of personality
Broca’s area
Moving muscles required for speech production
Parietal lobe functions
somatosensory cortex, spatial awareness
Primary somatosensory cortex
receives and processes sensory information from the skin and body for perception. Receives information from senses. Involved with sensations like pressure, heat, touch.
Occipital lobe functions
Visual cortex
Primary visual cortex
Receives and processes visual information from the eyes
Temporal lobe functions
auditory cortex, facial recognition, memory, Wernicke’s area
Primary auditory cortex
Receives and processes sounds from the ears for auditory perception
Wernicke’s area
speech comprehension
