regions of the brain Flashcards
(10 cards)
Midbrain
The central part of the brain, connects neural pathways connecting upper and lower brain areas.
Communicates incoming sensory information and regulates arousal
Parts: reticular formation
Reticular formation (MIDBRAIN)
Network of neurons that regulates alertness and modifies muscle movements; extends into hindbrain and links upper and lower areas
Hindbrain
Located at the base of the brain around the brain stem, connects the different parts of the brain with one another
Parts: cerebellum, medulla, pons
Cerebellum (HINDBRAIN)
Helps coordinate voluntary muscle movement and regulates posture and balance and is also involved in learning and memory.
Medulla (HINDBRAIN)
responsible for regulating body systems necessary for survival like heart rate and breathing
Pons (HINDBRAIN)
Involved in sleep, dreaming, arousal from sleep and control of breathing and coordination of some muscle movements
Forebrain
The forebrain is the largest and most developed part of the brain, responsible for higher-order thinking processes including problem-solving and planning, as well as memory, language, emotions and body movements.
Parts: cerebrum, thalamus, hypothalamus
Hypothalamus (FOREBRAIN)
regulates body’s internal homeostasis), it controls body temperature, hunger, sleep and circadian rhythm
Thalamus (FOREBRAIN)
receives information from sensory organs and relays it to relevant parties of the brain for analysis
Cerebrum (FOREBRAIN)
primarily responsible for cognitive processes such as learning, memory and thinking
