Q

ARDS - what does it stand for and define

A

acute respiratory distress syndrome
respiratory disorder characterized by respiratory insufficiency that may occur as a result of trauma, pneumonia, oxygen toxicity, gram-negative sepsis, and systemic inflammatory response

2
Q

aerosolized agents

A

group of aerosol drugs for pulmonary applications that includes: adrenergic, anticholinergic, mucoactive, corticosteriod, anti asthmatic, and antiinfective agents and surfactants instilled directly into the trachea

3
Q

airway resistance (Raw)

A

measure of the impedance to ventilation caused by the movement of gas through the airway

4
Q

chemical name

A

name indicating the chemical structure of the drug

5
Q

COPD

A

disease process characterized by airflow limitation that is not FULLY reversible, is usually progressive, and is associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the lung to noxious particles or gases

6
Q

name diseases that cause airflow limitation

A

chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, and bronchiectasis

7
Q

code name

A

name assigned by a manufacturer to an experimental drugs - normally alpha and numerical

8
Q

CF - what does it stand for and define

A

cystic fibrosis - inherited disease of the exocrine glands, affecting the pancreas, respiratory system, and apocrine glands

9
Q

when do symptoms begin for CF

A

infancy

10
Q

what are the symptoms of CF

A

increased electrolytes in the sweat, chronic respiratory infection, and pancreatic insufficiency

11
Q

drug administration

A

method by which a drug is made available to the body

12
Q

generic name

A

name assigned to a chemical by USAN when it may have therapeutic use and can be marketed

13
Q

nonproprietary name

A

name of drug other than its trademarked name

14
Q

official name

A

in the event that an experimental drug becomes fully approved by the NSP-NF the generic names becomes the official name

15
Q

orphan drug

A

drug that diagnosis or treats rare diseases of fewer than 200,000 in the US

16
Q

pharmacodynamics

A

mechanisms of drug action by which a drug molecule causes its effect on the body

17
Q

pharmacogenetics

A

study of the interrelationship of genetic differences and drug effects

18
Q

pharmacognosy

A

identification of sources of drugs, from plants and animals

19
Q

pharmacokinetics

A

time course and deposition of a drug in the body

20
Q

what four things is pharmacokinetics based on

A

absorption,, distribution, metabolism, and elimination

21
Q

pharmacology

A

study of drugs

22
Q

pharmacy

A

preparation and dispensing of drugs

23
Q

pneumocystis carinii

A

organism causing pneumocystis pneumonia in humans, seen in immunosuppressed humans like those with HIV

24
Q

prescription

A

written order for a drug, along with any specific instructions for compounding, dispensing, and taking the drug

25
Q

pseudomonas aeruginosa

A

gram-negative organism, primarily nosocomial pathogen causing UTI’s, respiratory system infections, bacteremia, general systemic infections, and is seen in patients with severe burns or patients that are immunosuppressed - cancer/aids

26
Q

respiratory care pharmacology

A

application of pharmacology to the treatment of cardiopulmonary disorders and critical care

27
Q

RSV- what does it stand for and define

A

respiratory syncytial virus - virus that causes the formation of syncytial masses in cells leading to inflammation in bronchioles which may cause respiratory distress in young infants

28
Q

therapeutics

A

art of treating diseases with drugs

29
Q

toxicology

A

study of toxic substances and their pharmacologic actions, including antidotes and poison control

30
Q

trade name

A

brand name or proprietary name, given by a particular manufacturer
