Sympathetic Nervous System
Arousing/Alert (Salivation decreasing, eyes dilate, etc)
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Calming (Digestion activates, heart slows, etc)
James-Lang Theory
Emotions come from awareness of specific body responses to emotion-arousing stimuli
Threat→Heart Racing (Observed)→Fear
Cannon-Bard Theory
Emotion-Arousing stimuli trigger body responses and simultaneous subjective experience
Heart Racing = Fear
Schachter-Singer Theory
Emotion depends on two factors, general arousal and a conscious cognitive label
Fear and Excitement are the same feeling, depends on cotext
Zajonc-LeDoux Theory
Sometimes body responses happen instantly, without conscious thought
Stimulus→Fear with no middle ground
Lazarus Theory
Cognitive appraisal, regardless of awareness, defines emotion
How do Psychologist define motivation?
a need or desire that energizes and directs behavior
What are the four key motivation theories?
- Instinct: genetically predisposed behavior
- Drive-Reduction: inner pushes and external pulls
- Arousal: Right level of stimulation
- Hierarchy of Needs: priority of needs
Yerkes-Dodson Law
The principle that performance increases with arousal until a certain point, then it starts to decrease
What evidence points to our human affiliate need - our need to belong?
Evolution wise - It helped us survive when we still were hunters and gatherers, more hands to catch food
We naturally have an affiliation need that becomes more prominent the longer we are alone
Affiliation Need
the need to build and maintain relationships and to feel apart of a group
