hypothyroidism
develops when an infant is born with inadequate thyroid function; can lead to delayed physical and nervous system development; potentially mental retardation if left untreated
Congenital hypothyroidism (cretinism)
characterized by weight loss, heat intolerance, disruptions in blood pressure and heart rhythms, and development of a goiter and exophthalmos (enlargement of thyroid gland and protruding eyeballs, respectively)
hyperthyroidism
most common cause of hyperthyroidism; results from immune system producing abnormal proteins that mimic actions of TSH on thyroid gland
graves’ disease
