To protect members of society and sanction those who commit offences

Purpose of Committal Proceedings
- Ensure no trial if inadequate evidence
- Find out plans to plead guilt or not

- Give accused opportunity to put forward case at early stage and cross examine witnesses

- Permitted by statute
- Consent of court
- Consent of accused
- Punishable by <10 yrs prison <=1200 penalty points
- Accused pleads guilty
