Ch 3 FAP Flashcards
(21 cards)
Integral proteins
With in the membrane
Peripheral protiens
Bound to inner or outer surface of the membrane
Anchoring proteins ( stabilizers)
Attach to inside or outside structures
Receptor proteins
Bind and respond to ligands (ions, hormones)
Carrier proteins
Transport specific solutes through membrane
Channels
Regulate water flow and solutes passing through membrane
Gated channels
Open or close to regulate passage of substances
Prokaryotes
Like bacteria
Eukaryotes
Like animal plant and fungal cells
Sex cells
Male sperm, female ooytes have 23 chromosomes
Somatic cells
All body cells except sex cells and have 46 chromosomes
The cell membrane
Divides the inside from the outside of the cell, communicates with other cells
Biphospholipid plasma membrane
Has 2 layers of phospholipids that interact to form the plasma membrane, barrier to ions and water-soluble compounds
Hydrophillic heads
Like water and interact with other heads, face outside
Hydrophobic tails
Interact with other tails and dont like water, face inside
Extracellular fluid (interstitial fluid)
A watery medium that surrounds a cell
Cytoplasm/ cytosol (intracellular fluid
Contains dissolved materials like nutrients, ions, proteins, and waste products
^protien and potassium v carb, lipid, amino acid and sodium levels
Nonmembranous organelles
Have direct contact with cytosol
Include the cytoskeleton, centrioles, ribosomes, proteasomes, microvilli, cilia, flagella
Membranous organelles
Isolated from cytosol by its own plasma membrane
Includes ER, golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, mitochondria
Endoplasmic Reticulum ER
Smooth & Rough
Functions
- Synthesis of proteins, carbs, fats
-storage of synthesized molecules and materials
- transport mat wi ER
- detoxification of drugs or toxins
