Ch 4 - The Cells Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is cell membrane made of?
Phosholipid bilayer
What type of molecules are allowed in cell membrane?
Hydrophillic molecules cannot pass through, hydrophobic can.
What is diffusion?
Higher to lower concentration BART TRAIN
What is osmosis?
Water moving from high to low
What is facilitated diffusion?
Diffusion with a helper
What are characteristics of facilitated diffusion?
specificity, saturation, inhibition and competition
What are 3 types of active transport?
- Active transport pumps
- Endocytosis
- Exocytosis
What is exocytosis?
Transport out of cell EXIT
Two types of endocytosis and definition?
Phagocytosis: solid being transported in
Pinocytosis: water being transported in
What type of cell does mitosis create?
Diploid
What is mitosis used for?
body growth, regenerate tissue
What is meiosis used for?
sexual reproduction
What is meiosis cell produced?
Haploid cell
What phase is the cell mostly in
interphase
4 stages of mitosis
prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telephase
What happens during or after telophase
Cytokinesis
What is a benign tumour
growing non threatning
What is a malignent tumour
rapid life threatening
What are 4 types of microorganism
Bacteria, Virus, Fungi, protozoea
What is bacteria
Prokaryotic cell, some harmful, some helpful, treated w antibiotics
What is virus
Infectious particles, don’t respond to antibiotics, must enter cell to grow
What is fungi
One celled or multi celled, spread through spores
What is protozoa
one celled, animal like, get them by swallowing them or bitten by insect
