The Skeletal System Flashcards
(38 cards)
What do bones in the skeletal system do?
- produce blood cells
- protect soft body parts
- act as storage units for minerals and fat
How many bones in adult skeleton?
206
What are long bones? Give an example.
longer then they are wide, ex arm & legs
What are short bones? Give an example.
fairly equal in length and width, ex wrist & ankles
What are flat bones? Give an example.
thinner and can be flat or curved, ex skull, ribs, sternum
What are irregular bones? Give an example.
odd in shape, ex hip bone
What are the 2 types of tissues bones can be composed as?
compact, spongy
What is a compact bone?
dense hard tissue, found in shafts of long bones and outer layer of other bones
What are mature bone cells called?
oestocytes
What is a spongy bone?
arranged in bars and plates, irregular holes, provides space for red bone marrow
What does red bone marrow produce?
red blood cells
What is periosteum?
peri = outside!!
outer covering of bone, it is a connective tissue
What is expanded end of long bone called?
epiphysis
What is epiphysis made of + what does it contain?
made of spongy bone, contains red marrow
What is diaphysis?
region between 2 epiphysis (aka middle part of bone)
What is diaphysis used for?
storage area for yellow marrow
What is ossification?
used to describe the formation of bones in body
What is osteoprogenitor?
nonspecialized cells found in periosteum, endosperm and central canal of compact bone
What is osteoblast?
cells that form bones
B-last = B-uild
What is osteocyte?
mature bone cells that starts as osteoblasts
What are osteoclasts job?
tear down bone material
osteoClast-Crumble
What is an epiphyseal plate?
Growth plate, exists when bone needs to lengthen
What is cartilage used for?
- cushion between bones
What happens when 2 or more bones join together?
forms a joint or articular
