ch. 4 - thoeries and models of exercise behavior 2 Flashcards
classical conditioning
state that a reflexive behavior (salivating, eye blinking), can be elicited through repeated pariings of the behaviour with an atecedent cue
antecedent cue
a cue that precedes the behavior
ex. ringing bell with delivering food
instrumental conditioning
state that voluntary (non-reflexive) behavior can be learned by pairing the behavior with consequent reinforcement
consequent reinforcement
a reward that follows behaviour
transtheoretical model (ttm) (5 stages)
- precontemplation stage
- contemplation stage
- preparation stage
- action stage
- maintenance stage
how do people move through trantheoretical stages?
- how people think about exercise
- how people think about themselves
- aspects of the environment that influence exercise behavior
decisional balance
it reflects how people perceieve the pros and cons of changing their behaviour.
research involving TTM (3)
- descriptive studies (describe diff ppl between TTM stages)
- predictive studies (predict future behaviour)
- intervention studies (studies that use the TTM to develop exercise interventions)
social ecological model
take the approach that these individual-level factors are only one of multiple levels of influence on behavior
microsystem
immediate systems in which people interact
mesosystem
parents (home microsystem) and teachers (classroom) coordinate their efforts to increase a childs physical activity levels
exosystem
external systems that influence the microsystems
macrosystem
encompasses all of these other system
is the larger sociocultural context in which a person resides; includes cultural values, political philosophies, economic patter and social conditions.
