what is a race/racial group?
social group set apart from others, largely based on real or perceived external characteristics or traits typically believed to be hereditary
what is ethnicity?
distinguished primarily on the basis of culture, or nationality traits
what is organized religion?
belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, a God, or gods
what is spirituality?
places an emphasis on holistic wellbeing (body, mind, spirit) and is often associated with individualized attitudes, beliefs and practices
what is the Marginality hypothesis?
explains under participation in terms of limited socioeconomic resources
what is the Ethnicity hypothesis (subculture hypothesis)?
indicates that minority under participation is a result of culturally based differences between value systems, norms, and leisure socialization patterns
what is the Discrimination hypothesis?
the assumption that actual or perceived discrimination negatively influences participation among minority group members
what is Multiple-hierarchy stratification?
based on the assumption that the cumulative effects of multiple sources of inequality on indicators of life quality are more profound than that of a single source
what is Critical consciousness?
the ability to perceive social, political, and economic contradictions and to take action against the oppressive elements of society
what is Cultural desire?
the motivation of a provider to want to become culturally competent
what is cultural knowledge?
the process of seeking and obtaining an educational foundation about diverse cultural groups
what is cultural competency?
understanding and acceptance of the beliefs, values, and ethics of others
demonstrate skills necessary to work with and serve diverse individuals and groups
what is a cultural encounter?
the process that encourages providers to directly engage in cross-cultural interaction with diverse clients
what is cultural skill and assessment?
a systematic appraisal or examination of individuals, groups, and communities as to their beliefs, values, and practices to determine explicit needs and intervention practices within the context of the people being served
