what is agism?
a socially constructed way of thinking about older persons based on negative attitudes and stereotypes about aging
tendency to structure society based on an assumption that everyone is young
failing to respond appropriately to the needs of older persons
what is age discrimination?
prejudice or discrimination on the basis of a person’s age
what is an informal caregiver and family caregiver?
unpaid family, friends / neighbors.
Primary or secondary caregivers,
full time or part time
live with the person or live separately
what is a formal caregiver?
volunteers or paid care providers associated with a service system
an individual is considered to have an intellectual disability based on the following three criteria:
- IQ below below 70-75
- significant limitations exist in two or more adaptive skill areas
- the condition manifests itself before the age of 18
what are 3 tests to determine limitations in adaptive behaviour?
- Conceptual skills — language and literacy; money, time, number concepts
- Social skills
- Practical skills — activities of daily living
