CH 53 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Populations
Individuals of the same spp. that share resources and interbreed
Population bio describes
- distribution
- density and growth
- demographics
Distribution
Depends on the physical environment, adaptations of organisms, behavior, etc.
Types of distribution
- clumped
- uniform
- random
Density dependent factors
- cause drop in birth rates or rise in mortality as pop density increases
- act to restrict pop growth
Density independent factors
- effects on pop growth are the same regardless of density
- generally abiotic
Metapopulations
- linked groups of organisms
- allow for immigration and emigration
Demographics
Study of statistics of pop over tuned especially:
- changes in size and composition
- factors that influence change
Life history traits
Investments in growth, reproduction , and survivorship
- shaped by natural selection
Semelparity
One and done reproduction of many, often unpredictable
Iteroparity
- repeated reproduction
- regular production of fewer offspring
- stable environments
r-selected opportunists
- well below K and/or unstable environments
- maximize reproductive out put
- lots of offspring early and often
- can become pests
K selected equilibrium spp
- close to K and/or stable environments
- longer lived, fewer offspring, more parental involvement
Survivorship curve: type 1
Low death rate, many life to old age
Survivorship Curve: Type 2
moderate death rate for individuals at all ages
Survivorship Curve: type 3
High death rate: many die young, few live to old age
