ch 9 Flashcards
(3 cards)
Physical imacpts
temp: its going to get warmer
min and max temp inc, inc in extreme temps,= inc death, infrastructure strain/power grid failure, dec crop yeild
rain:
-inc. in rain bc inc in heat/evaporation/gh gas for every degree of warming, wet area= more wet, dry= drier, strong rain during heavy downpour(aka time of the year when it rains the hardest)
-inc soil saturation of water=more flooding. more time between rain aka rain spouts, inc in wintertime rain/less snow and snow runnoff= watersjortges for ppl and agracultre
trend of inc rain since 1970
sea lvl rise: 100% concequence
- ice/glaciers on LAND melts from wamrning ghgas inc water in oceans= sea lvl rise= places under water, eroison
- water in ocean expand bc of warmth= raise sea lvl
-PLACES Where ground rise faster than water= erosion, ground settling
-measure rise w/ tide gauges (meausres high and low tides and how they are rising/falling)
SEA ICE HAS NO IMPACT ON SEA LEVEL BC THE AMT OF ICE ICE THAT DISPLACES THE WATER= AMT OF WATER FROM THE EICE THAT WILL MELT IN THE WATER = NET ZERO RISE
Ocean acidification:
- 100% consequence
-remmebrer: carbonic acid is when CO2 disolves in the ocean
- lower than 7 = more acidic= difficulty of crustations make their shells (ex: sea butterlies)
hurricanes:
- less frequent to more intense and st4onger storm surge, warming, riseing sea lvl = stronger strom surge bc warmer atmosphere holds more water
gcm breaks warth into grids/little squares that each simulate the earth’s weather/temp/rain/clpud movements for the future or just for tracking purposes
nevevr say climate change is the cause, rater it can worsen it
study of this called extreme-event attribution ex studyigna. worls where there are no human emmissions impacting an event
non linear climate impacts
thiongs dont get progressivly worse, things are find until they arent
- they are destabelizing,
thign hits=danage, property tax/value dec= social decay= ppl move away= more social decay and repeat
things we can do to aadapt
1.protect by make mbarrier, 2.acomidate to widthstand sealvl rise,
3. relocate and moce
unmanages systems:
-cant adapt to everything
9eg. ocean acidification, thigns will go extinct and evolve, rapid change makes it difficult to evolvee)
ex: mangrove forrest die, natural barrier to storm surge is gone= ecosystem collapse=inc vunverability (ex no mangrove= bee cannot pollinate mangrove= less mangrove)
climate tipping poitns
sudden and
significant shift in some aspect of the climate
on human time scales due to human forcing of
the climate.
climate threshhold: the amt where its considered too much of something???? ask stud fetch again
