Five Fundamental Themes of Geography
Location, Place, Human-environment reaction, Movement, region
Six Essential Elements of Geography
World in Spatial Terms, Places and Regions, Physical Systems, Human Systems, Environment and Society, Uses of Geography
Assimilation
integrating someone into an established community
Built Environment
Human designed
Carrying Capacity
the ability for land to hold a population
Complementarity
Mutual dependence among regions
Cultural Convergence
Interaction among cultures and adaptation or accommodation
Cultural Diffusion
The spread of ideas or behaviors associated with one culture to another
Doubling time
The time it takes to double a population
Ecology
The study of ecosystems
Ethnic Separatism
Creation of separate distinct groups or cultures based on ethnicity
Ethnocentrism
Bias towards viewing/evaluating other cultures against one’s own
Habitat
The environment in which an organism is naturally found
Interdependence
Relation among parts of an ecological or cultural system each plays a role
Maximum Sustainability Yield
The greatest amount of a species that can be removed and still replaced in the natural order
Demographic Cycle
High stationery, Early Expanding, Late Expanding, Low stationery, Declining
Mercator Map
Most famous, distort sizes of the landmass
Conformal Map
The land shape is accurate
Equal Area Projections
The relative size of geographical features is preserved but can distort land
Equidistant Projections
Accurate distances from a given point, but distances from other places are not accurate
Gnomonic Projections
preserve accurate directions from a given point. The further from the point, the bigger the distortions.
Geographic Info System (GIS)
A database that includes geographical info that helps tag an item in space
Remote Sensing
Collects data that is very large or inaccessible or difficult to traverse
