Ch. 9 Tree Support and Lightning Protection Flashcards
(26 cards)
7-strand, common-grade cable
steel-cable construction in which seven strands are twisted together in a spiral pattern. Used to limit movement or add supplemental structural support to trees
air terminal
uppermost part of a tree lightning protection system, located near the top of a tree or large leader, intended to provide a lightning strike termination or attachment point; may be either a manufactured terminal or the end of the conductor.
amon-eye nut
drop-forged nut used to fashion a through-hardware anchor
anchor hardware
hardware installed to affix and/or terminate a cable or guy to a tree, the ground, or to another device
bend radius
radius of an object around which a line passes
cable stop
in tree support systems, metal fitting that can be affixed to the ends of steel cable strands to terminate a cable installation
conductor
(1) in an electric utliity system, metal wires, cables and bus-bar used for carrying electric current. Conductors may be solid or stranded (i.e., built up by an assembly of smaller solid conductors). (2) any object, material or medium (e.g., guy wires, communication cables, tools, equipment, vehicles, humans, animals) capable of conducting electricity of energized, intentionally or unintentionally.
dead-end grips
manufactured wire wrap designed to forma termination in the end of a 1x7 left-hand lay cable
extra-high-strength (EHS) cable
in tree support systems, type of 7-strand steel cable, often used to cable trees. Stronger but less flexible than common-grade cable. Must be terminated with dead-end tree grips or terminal fasteners
eye bolt
drop-forged, closed-eye bolt, used to anchor cables to a tree in a through-fastened system
eye splice
(1) in cabling, a closed termination loop, hand formed in common-grade cable by wrapping the successive strands back upon the standing part to attach the cable to anchor hardware. (2) a rope or cable splice that forms a closed eye or loop.
ground rod
metal rod used in grounding a lightning protection system
ground terminal
in a tree lightning protection system, a conductive plate or rod used to ground
guying
installation of a steel cable or synthetic-rope cabling system and an external anchor to provide supplemental support
lag eye
lag-threaded, drop-forged, closed-eye cable anchor used for dead-end systems
lag hook (j-hook)
lag-threaded, j-shaped cable anchor
lag-threaded
cable anchor or bracing rod with a coarse thread pattern; typically screwed into a predrilled hole that is smaller in diameter than the anchor or rod
machine-threaded
fine-thread pattern on hardware, used with a nut and washer and installed through a pre-drilled hole that is larger in diameter than the hardware being installed.
propping
the installation of rigid structures between the ground and a branch or trunk to provide support
rope support system
cabling system that utilizes elastic materials (usually rope of various constructions) for tree support systems
ship auger
type of drill bit with an open spiral form. Used to drill holes in trees for cable or bracing installation
steel cable system
cabling system that utilizes steel cable to limit movement and provide support of branches
swage
hollow metal fitting used to terminate a wire rope (aircraft cable)
thimble
(1) and oblong, galvanized, or stainless-steel fitting with flared margins and an open-ended base. (2) a device used to increase the bend radius of and reduce wear on a rope when attached to hardware
