What is work specialization?
Dividing activities into separate, specialized jobs to improve efficiency.
What is departmentalization?
The basis by which jobs are grouped together—by function, product, geography, customer, or process.
What is the chain of command?
An unbroken line of authority from the top to the lowest level in the organization.
What is ‘unity of command’?
Each person should report to only one supervisor to avoid conflicting instructions.
What does ‘span of control’ refer to?
The number of subordinates a manager can effectively supervise.
What is the advantage of a wide span of control?
Fewer management levels, lower costs, faster decisions, and increased flexibility.
What is centralization in an organization?
Decision-making authority is concentrated at the top levels of management.
What is decentralization?
Decision-making authority is distributed to lower-level managers closer to the action.
What is formalization?
The extent to which rules, procedures, and job descriptions are standardized and documented.
What is boundary spanning?
Connecting across departments or organizations to gather information and collaborate beyond formal structures.

Low departmentalization, wide span of control, centralized authority in one person, and little formalization.
What is the matrix structure?
A hybrid organizational structure combining functional and product departmentalization with dual lines of authority.
What is the main disadvantage of the Autocratic Model?
Employees feel insecure, dissatisfied, and are discouraged from sharing ideas or innovations.
How does the Custodial Model differ from the Autocratic Model?
The Custodial Model motivates employees through economic rewards and company loyalty, rather than authority.
