Q

Describe the adventitia

A

Connective tissue layer composed of loose areolar tissue that blends with the surrounding anatomical structures and allows movement of the trachea along its length

Q

Describe the musculocartilaginous layer

A

Cartilage rings the trachealis muscle and the fibroelastic annular ligaments. Together cartilage and muscle for complete semi flexible rings
Neighbouring rings are attached to each other by the annular ligaments

Q

Describe the submucosa

A

Contains elastic fibers, fat cells and seromucous tubular glands which open into the lumen of the trachea

15
Q

Where is the trachea located in the neck ie surrounding structures

A
  1. Visceral space
  2. Ventral to longus coli muscles
  3. Carotid sheaths are dorsolateral to
    the trachea
  4. The sternothroideus m is ventral to
trachea for most of its length
  5. Oesophagus starts dorsal to trachea
    then left side at C4
  6. Sternohyoid ventral to it in cervical
    portion
  7. Sternocephalic, omrohyoid and
    sternothroid at lateral to trachea
    near larynx
  8. Paired thyroid glands at 1st ring

16
Q

At what level does the oesophagus move to the left of the trachea

A

C4 then ventral at C6

17
Q

What is housed in the carotid sheaths

A

Common carotid arteries
Vagosympathetic trunks
Recurrent laryngeal nerves

18
Q

Best location to perform a tracheotomy and why?

A

Cranial 3rd - Sternocephalic bellies divide
Omohyoid mm converge
Oesophagus is lateral
