-warm up chain saw prior to cutting

6

Do NOT attempt cutting above?

CHEST height

-throttle up to FULL SPEED before allowing chain to tough wood

slopes- stand on UPHILL SIDE of tree or log

start cuts with BUMPER SPIKE against wood /slowly rock back and forth...let chain saw do cutting

do NOT force chain saw

9

Circle of Danger?

at least 10' feet
-saw OPERATOR and CONTROL person ONLY personnel in this area during cutting (power saw- officer/operator/guide)

10

If POSSIBLE, OFFICER is positioned to permit _____contact with the CONTROL person?

VISUAL

VISUAL contact with CONTROL person(bluff--operator)

11

If POSSIBLE, OFFICER is positioned to permit _____contact with the CONTROL person?

VISUAL

VISUAL contact with CONTROL person(bluff--operator)

12

Because of noise level of chain saw....establish?

Hand signals between operator /control and OFFICER

13

Control person should be positioned as to permit EASY VISUAL contact with?

OPERATOR -maintaing safe distance from the saw

14

ANYTIME control member approaches the IMMEDIATE cutting area, the OPERATOR must?

apply chain brake and SIGNAL control member to approach (operator signals---NOT officer)

15

ANYTIME control member approaches the IMMEDIATE cutting area, the OPERATOR must?

apply chain brake and SIGNAL control member to approach (operator signals---NOT officer)

-debris from cutting area should not be removed from work area until saw operator indicates it is safe to do so

19

Do NOT attempt cutting an object that has...

fallen against structure and is now supported by it

20

Trees are ____conductors of electricity ?

GOOD

21

NEVER make plunge cuts with TIP of blade...

NEVER use the tip of the saw blade for cutting

22

NEVER make plunge cuts with TIP of blade...

NEVER use the tip of the saw blade for cutting

NEVER operate chain saw in UNCOMFORTABLE position

23

If a log is impractical to support:

cut 1/2"-3/4" of diameter downward....finish cut by cutting UPWARD the remaining portion photo-figure 9)

25

Wood on the ground or standing timber which is under tension, has first to be cut on the COMPRESSION SIDE, then TENSION SIDE.

For PINCHING- use wedge or cut on slight angle

27

Limbing is removing branches from a fallen tree...

extreme danger of KICKBACK, during limbing operation...do not work with NOSE of the bar...do NOT STAND ON LOG while limbing it

-start limbing by leaving lower limbs to support the log off the ground...NOT necessary to run saw at full throttle (usually that is normal procedure)

use caution -limbs can spring back towards operator

29

Cutting trees blown or uprooted.?

start cutting TRUNK from Topside, working toward the stump, this will help lighten load on pressure points

make trunk cuts, working toward stump, beware, the tree can stand back upright when you remove enough weight

31

When bucking..?

-do NOT stand on the log
-make sure log will not roll downhill
-if on a slope, stand on the uphill side of the log

32

Never permit another person to HOLD THE LOG...

Never hold the log in place with your leg or foot

33

VISUAL

VISUAL contact with CONTROL person(bluff--operator)

35

Never permit another person to HOLD THE LOG...

Never hold the log in place with your leg or foot

36

Safety requirements...

-saw shall NOT be operated from a ladder
-bunker coats, pants, and glove are NOT saw protected and will not prevent chain saw blade from inflicting injury
-do not use saw where vision is limited

-always hold running saw with both hands
-never operate saw above your SHOULDERS(mentioned chest high cuts)

37

When transporting, refueling or performing maintenance, Saw must be ?

OFF position
-never cut while wearing loose clothing
-use SAW protected glove while operating saw and HANDLING CHAIN

38

IF CHAIN spins while at idle ...

PLACE OOS (similar to power saw)

-once cut is started, do not slow down and accelerate, saw may pull you off balance

DO NOT leave saw unattended while running

-not actively cutting, SAFETY BRAKE must always be applied

-"feathering"-increasing and decreasing pressure on throttle trigger- used JUST PRIOR TO FINISHING A CUT

39

When operating chain saw...

secure or remove HT

40

Repair to Chain saw?

Tech Services

examine and test saw WEEKLY

41

TWO PERSONS at all times...
