Flashcards in Sound Powered Telephones Tools 31 Deck (20):
1

Sound powered phone provide HARDWIRE means of communications, without a needed power source...

Sound powered phones can be used as a stand alone system in tunnels, high rise buildings, or ANYWHERE IC deems beneficial

-used PRIMARILY in NYC transit and under river tunnels

2

Sound Powered Phones have been issued to following units?

ALL BATTALIONS
HIGH RISE UNITS (E-3 AND E-39)
FIELD COMMUNICATIONS UNIT

3

Sound Powered telephone equipment consists of :

waterproof SPT box
wire reels
-2 head sets
-2 1620 keys- used to gain access to SPT connectors in the NYCT system
- 2 amplifiers
-"Y" connector
-2 jumper cords
-T handle subway key
-4 glow sticks
-screwdriver (to change amplifier battery)
laminated instruction sheet

4

Headsets have ____then handsets , and allow for ______which enables the user to perform tasks...a 1620 key is attached to headset ?

LESS INTERFERENCE and background noise

HANDS FREE

-both have male connectors

5

Wire reel is how many feet?

400

-with a 3 foot long fixed wire---HEADSET is connected to fixed wire

6

Male end has 2 pins and locking collar...female end has ?

2 pin receptacles

7

Y connector is used to?

split sound powered phone system--allows for additional communication points

8

Amplifiers increase volume of verbal transmissions but are not required to be used..

if amplifier is used..volume should be HIGHEST setting

9

The PTA BUTTON MUST BE PRESSED and held whenever the user wants to transmit a message...

once the message is COMPLETED, THE PTA BUTTON MUST BE RELEASED, or reply will not be heard (similar to apparatus radio)

10

T or F..When a member is dedicated to maintain the SPT communications link, he should be PAIRED with another member monitoring HT communications

TRUE

11

SPT DO NOT emit a ringing/buzzing sound when communications are initiated...

member monitoring SPT must CONSTANTLY LISTEN FOR MESSAGES

12

T or F...A member using a headset in a standby position (awaiting transmissions) should COVER the mouthpiece with his hand to reduce background noise

TRUE

13

NYCT has installed 2 types of SPT systems?

-street to station-particular station and street above

street to tunnel- particular UNDER RIVER TUNNEL or tubes (both directions)and a location on both sides of the tunnel, typically the nearest emergency exit

14

There is USUALLY no connection from one SPT SYSTEM to another (example: from an under river tunnel system to nearby station)..

HEADSETS are preferred for use throughout NYCT due to background noise

15

T or F...ALL SPT CONNECTORS WITHIN NYCT are located in locked metal boxes that are adjacent to standpipe siamese or outlets

TRUE
-boxes containing SPT jacks required a 1620 KEY to open

16

Where are SPT connectors located at STREET LEVEL?

NEAR the Standpipe siamese, with a sign reading STREET TO STATION COMMUNICATIONS

-standpipe siamese and spt connectors are not always found closest to subway entrances...they may be located a few HUNDRED FEET away from the station , in either direction of train travel...they also may be found in the middle of large roadways (houston street/grand concourse/queens blvd)

17

SPTs located on MEZZANINE OR PLATFORM LEVEL are located ?

in RED METAL BOXES inside STAINLESS STEEL STANDPIPE CABINETS

-standpipe cabinets identified by sign -white hose on red background

-combination Standpipe/SPT boxes may be located on columns or station wall....if there is no SPT outlet located in the standpipe box, look in surrounding area for small individual cabinet

18

Street to TUNNEL systems ...

usually include specific PAIR of tubes..example: members in Brooklyn bound-Clark st. tube can speak to members in Manhattan bound- clark street tube.....BUT NOT IN COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TUBE

-SPT CONNECTOR typically located at the STREET LEVEL SIAMESE CONNECTIONS CLOSEST TO THE EMERGENCY EXITS ON BOTH SIDE OF THE UNDER RIVER TUBES

-IN THE UNDER RIVER TUBES- SPT connectors are found at STANDPIPE OUTLETS: approx. 200 feet apart....transit authority will identify these outlets by NUMBER (GOOD INDICATION of location of incident)...Members operating in the tube should NOTIFY IC OF STANDPIPE OUTLET NUMBER

19

ONLY Under river tunnels that don't have sound powered phones?

JORALEMON STREET TUNNEL

20

What is the required maintenance for SPT ?

change the 9 volt battery in the amplifier SEMI ANNUALLY

-Amplifier not working - contact R&D- repair and replacement
