What was the XYZ affair?

A

J. Adams sent a delegation to Paris to stop the destruction of merchant ships. XYZ asked for requested bribes for entering negotiations. They refused, Americans got pissed and wanted to go to war

What were the alien and sedation acts?

A

Adopted by the federalists to stop d-r’s:

  • naturalization act: 14 yrs required for immigrants to qualify for U.S. Citizenship (most d-r supporters were immigrants)
  • Alien acts: authorized the president to deport any aliens considered dangerous or in times of war
  • sedition act: newspapers couldn’t criticize either the president of congress, heavy fines or imprisonment for any who violated it

What were the Kentucky and Virginia resolutions?

A

Written by Madison and Jefferson, declared that states had entered into a “compact” in forming the national government, and if any act of the federal government broke the compact, state could nullify the federal law

A

John Jay sent out in an attempt to get British to stop seizing american merchant ships, but returned with a treaty in which Britain agreed to evacuate it’s posts on the western american frontier
Maintains Washington’s policy of neutrality.

A

Farmers were pissed about the whiskey excise tax, and attacked tax collectors. So Washington got 15,000 militia men led by Hamilton to show their force without bloodshed.

Spain agreed to open the lower Mississippi River and New Orleans to American trade

A

Battle of the fallen timbers: settlers moved west past the ohio river valley, and the British gave the native Americans arms. General Anthony Wayne defeated them:
Treaty of Greenville: chief of defeated native Americans surrendered claims in the ohio territory and opened it up for settlement
