CHANGE OF STATE Flashcards
(10 cards)
What happens when a solid becomes a liquid?
The particles gain kinetic energy. The attractive forces between the particles weaken, causing the particles to move away from eachother, and slide past eachother
What happens when a liquid changes into a gas?
The particles gain more and more energy which causes the particles to break free from the attractive forces. The particles move faster and further away from eachother
What happens when a gas turns into a liquid?
As heat is removed, particles lose kinetic energy, causing them to move slower. The attractive forces between the particles increase, causing the particles to slide past eachother.
What happens when a liquid turns into a solid?
During the process of freezing, particles begun to move slower and slower until they vibrate in fixed positions
What is kinetic energy?
A form of energy an object or particle has while its moving
Why is the melting point and freezing point the same?
both melting point and freezing point describe the same transition of matter.
What happens during a heating curve? (Solid to Liquid to gas)
Solid starts to melt, then becomes a liquid. Then the liquid behins to evaporate then becomes a gas
What happens during a cooling curve? (Gas to Liquid to Solid)
Gas begins to condensate then it becomes a liquid. The liquid begins to freeze, then becomes a solid
What is an endothermic change?
An endothermic change is a process where energy is absorbed from the form of heat.
What is an exothermic change
An exothermic change is a process where heat energy is released into the surroundings.
