ENERGY Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is energy
The ability to do work
What is energy measured in?
Joules or kilojoules
What are the two types of energy?
Kinetic and potential
What is kinetic energy?
Kinetic enrgy is the energy of movement. It involves movement of particles or objects.
What are the different forms of kinetic energy?
Sound energy
Light energy
electrical energy
Gravitational energy
Internal (thermal/heat)
What is potential energy?
This is energy stored in substances. Potential energy depends on the position of the object
What are the different forms of potential energy?
Gravitational energy
Strain energy
Chemical energy
Describe Sound energy
Sound energy is produced when an object vibrates, causing particles in the surrounding medium to move. These vibrations travel in waves and our ears pick up these waves and intepret them into sound
Describe light energy
Light energy is a type of electromagnetic energy that travels in waves and we can detect with our eyes. When light hits an object, it can be reflected, absorbed, or transmitted. The energy from light can produce heat, cuase chemical reactons, or create electricty
Describe internal energy
Internal energy is the total energy stored in a substance due to the movement and arrangement of its particles. The particles posses a certain amount of energy, which allows them to move. When a substance is heated, this movement increases
Describe Electrical energy
Electical energy is the energy caused by the movemnt of electric charges through a conductor. Electrical energy needs a circut. It can be stored or produced.
Describe Gravitiational Potential energy
Gravitational Potential Energy (G.P.E) is the energy an object has because of its height above the ground. The higher it is, the more energy it has due to gravity
Describe Strain energy
Strain enrgy is the energy an object has when its stretched, compressed, bent, or twisted. Some materials can easily be compressed, bent or twisted but spring back into shape once the force acting on them is removed. When a elastic material’s shape has changed, they store energy in a form that will allow them to return to their original state
Describe Chemical Potential Energy
Chemical Potential enrgy is the enrgy stored in the chemical bonds of a substance
What is the formula of G.P.E?
Wieght x Height
What is the defrence between energy transfer and energy transformation?
Energy transfer is when energy is transfered from one object to another without changing form. Energy transformation is the change of energy from one form to another.
Name the parts of a power station in order?
The boilor
Cooling tower
Turbine
Generator
Transformer
How does a power station work?
The boiler is where the fuel is burnt to boil water
The steam from the boiler is used to turn a turbine
The turbine is connected to the generator, which acts like a dynamo – it generates electricity out of movement
The steam is cooled down and turned back into water in the cooling tower
