STATES OF MATTER Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the three states of matter?
Gas, Liquids, Solids
Name three propeties of a liquid
- Liquids have a definite mass and the volume doesn’t change
2.Particles are close together with space between some of the particles
3.Liquids are hard to compress
Name three propeties of a gas
1.Gas has no definite mass or volume
2. Particles in a gas are far apart
3. Particles move freely in all directions
Name three propities of a solid
1.Particles form a lattice
2. Paricles virbrate
3. Particles are closely packed
Define a Gas
A substance or a matter in a state in which it will expand freely to fill a whole of a container, having no fixed shape (unlike a solid) and no fixed volume (unlike a liquid)
Define Liquids
A substance that flows freely but is constsant of volume, having a consistency that is like water or oil
Define Solids
A solid is a state of matter that retains its shape and density when not confined
What is a Crystalline solid
In a crystalline solid, particles are in a highly ordered, repeating pattern ex. a diamond
What is a Amorphous solid
In an amorphous solid, Particles are arranged more randomly without a regular pattern
eg. rubber
What is viscosity
A fluid’s resistance to flow. If a liquid flows easily it has low viscosity, if a liquid flows more slowly and is thick, it has high viscosity
