Why is the doomsday book important when exploring land owner ship in the years 1066-1069 ?

A

Gives us records of every piece of land and who owned it and it covers, almost, the whole of England

How did the doomsday book work? Why is that important

A

Organised by counties and each county begins with a list of tenants-in-chief (guys who held the kings land)
Then details every village and who owned it
Allows us to see when and who was replaced by Norman/ French people

A

-1085 there weee 1,000 tenants-in-chief who are the main landowners however only 13 are English ( SUS)
- 25% of England was held by just 10 great Norman Barons. One even made £800 a year making him a multi millionaire by todays standards
