-However Lanfranc the Archbishop of Canterbury was in charge who was very capable
- he was also supported by Williams half brother bishop Odo of Bayeux

A

Waltheof betrayed the plotters
He confessed to Lanfranc
- we don’t know why he did it but it’s possible he was forced to take part and told Lanfranc as soon as possible or perhaps he intended to betray them we simply don’t know

A

As soon as Lanfranc here’s about it he set out to stop it
- he wrote to Roger telling him to make peice with the King
- this doesn’t work and Roger+Ralph don’t back down

- he fled to Norwhich then to Brittany, his wife defended Norwhich but surrendered and negotiated her leave to Brittany
- Ralph’s men got mutilated such as blinding and cutting off of limbs

  • all his lands got taken and he was imprisoned for the rest of his life
  • he died in prison in 1087

  • one morning in May 1076 he is rushed out and executed (be heading)
  • we don’t know why this happened but it’s possible William was angry at the rebels and had lost his patience

  • Waltheof spilt the beans to Lanfranc
  • the revolt was poorly planned and didn’t gain much support
  • Lanfranc and Odo reacted quickly and stopped the two armies merging
  • the rebels didn’t win the support of the English people
